About this object
The photograph shows the Empire Hotel on Shakespeare Road, Napier taken after the devastating earthquake and subsequent fire of 3 February 1931. The façade and exterior walls of the building have sheared off and the interior of the rooms are visible. The roof has also collapsed. The building on the left of the hotel has been completely destroyed. Brewster Street is on the right of the hotel. The debris has been cleared from the road to allow vehicle and public access.
