The photograph shows Hastings Street, Napier taken after the devastating earthquake and subsequent fire of 3 February 1931. The debris from the road and footpath has been removed to allow vehicle and public access. The tram line is still present in the road. The remains of the Waiapu Diocesan Office Building and Synod Hall can be seen behind the damaged buildings.
