About this object
The photograph shows Hastings Street, Napier taken after the devastating earthquake and subsequent fire of 3 February 1931. Only the facades and exterior walls of the commercial buildings have been left standing. The debris from the damaged buildings has been removed and the land cleared in readiness for rebuilding. The tram line is still present embedded in the road. The scorched white two storied Napier Post Office is visible and beyond that is the Caledonian Hotel.
