The photograph has been taken looking down Emerson Street, Napier. New buildings are being constructed after the destruction caused by the 1931 earthquake. The Criterion Hotel is being erected on the right hand side corner of Emerson and Hastings Streets. The spire of St Patrick's Catholic Church can be seen on the left.
