Brief Description
A booklet by William Colenso translating East Coast Māori legends of the sea and tides, with explanatory notes. The title reads: Ancient Tide-Lore and Tales of the Sea, from the Two Ends of the World. Also, some highly curious ancient and legendary little-known East Coast Māori stories. Translated, with explanatory notes on the same.
The chapter headings are:
I. Of the Cause of the Tides
II. Of the Sounding of the Sea
III. The Story of the old Priest Kae and the Pet Whale
IV. Of the Ancient Story of the Two Brothers, Waihuka and Tuteamoamo
V. Attested Stories of Dolphins Carrying Men Through the Sea, from Ancient History
VI. The Story of Paikea and Ruatapu
Adhered to the inside of the front cover is a handwritten note signed by William Colenso.
