Brief Description
A multiple-page handwritten manuscript entitled 1893-1953: Then and Now which was written in celebration and documentation of important New Zealand anniversaries that happened in 1953. These events were: the Diamond Jubilee of the granting of Women's Franchise; the Centennial of the first General Election; the Centennial of the first Parliament in New Zealand; and the arrival of the ANN, the first merchant steamer to enter New Zealand waters. The article is focused on the women's rights movement in New Zealand. It was likely that it was a speech script, or a rough draft of an article.

Some of the topics touched on are: Mr Alfred Saunders, the first man to advocate women's right to vote; WAAFs; education; women's buying power; state social services; reforms of social welfare, especially for children; Dr Emily McKinnon (nee Siedeberg and Dr Margaret Cruckshank who graduated with degrees in medicine from Otago University in 1896 & 1897, respectively, and their first-hand accounts of that experience; Dr Rina Mooe (nee Ropeha) who in 1948 was the first Māori woman to qualify as a doctor; in 1901 Miss Ethel Benjamin, and in 1902 Miss Ellen Melville, were the first women qualified as barristers and soliscitors. Miss Melville was also the first woman in the British Empire to establish her own law practise, and the first in New Zealand to become a City Councillor; lack of promotional opportunities within the work force for women; sexual discrimination in pay; manpower; defence services; the value of the vote; and historical notes on the process of granting the vote to women.

Glued to the reverse of some pages are newspaper clippings. These are: By Air over Tasman Anniversary of First Crossing, dated September 1953; Reunion in Napier More than 100 WAAFs to attend; N.Z. Woman have not made Full Use of Franchise; Fifty Years Ago, dated 3 Aug 1903; University Women in Public Life, dated 1950; Women's Franchise, undated; and How the Franchise was Won, undated.
