Brief Description
A booklet compiled by Aileen M Andersen, MBE, issued by the Hawke's Bay and East Coast Art Society in 1961. Written for the celebration of the Colenso anniversary. The celebration was held in Napier on the Browning and Herschell Streets site where there had been a cultural centre for 96 years and was currently an ethological (sic) Museum and Library devoted to New Zealand history. The booklet includes a biography of William Colenso before he came to New Zealand and details his accomplishments in New Zealand. It also has information about the Mechanics Institute in Napier; the Napier Athenaeum and museum; Charles Darwin; Allan Cunningham; Lady Jane Franklin and Sir John Franklin; Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker; the New Zealand Institute; colonial schools; Seventy Mile Bush; the Royal Society; Māori Dictionary; Lindauer; Te Hapuku; Donald McLean; Henry Stokes Tiffen; William Dinwiddie; The Religious, Charitable and Education Trust; Mission Station; Hawke's Bay Philosophical Institute and Colenso's houses and gardens.
