Brief Description
Letter and envelope from Percy R Manson.
a) Letter from Trooper Percy Manson to his sister Mabel on 11 October 1916 from Egypt. The letter reads:
Dear May,
Just a few lines to let you know I am still alive and keeping in the best of health and hope you are keeping the same. I received your most welcome letter which came to hand last Tuesday, & also one from Mum. Well May, soldering(sic) life is just about the same although I am quite used to it now. We were leaving for about thirty miles trek last Wednesday but it was cancelled for about ten days on account of some disease the Australians had, just as well as when we are out at the front we don’t get much time to ourselves in the mornings as the blessed Taubes come over and bomb us nearly every morning. The weather over here is beginning to get much cooler, now winter is coming on, the evenings being quite chilly but rain has not showed itself yet. Sunny Napier by all accounts in the paper has had a very wet winter quite a change for Napier. Did farmer Fred & Bill lose any young lambs the wet weather would be most trying time for the farmers when the young lambs are running about. How is your horse getting on these days. I see by your letter that Clive has had a weeks holiday on account of his health. Is Walter still up the Main Trunk Line. I suppose you get a little peace now they are away, as Clive use to be always telling Walter he ought to go to the war, & that he would be glad when compulsion came in. The war news over the other side is just about the same still firing foundrys (sic) at each other. Well May, I think I will have to close now as news is scarce. Hoping this will find you in the best of health as it leaves me.
I am Your loving brother
