a) Letter from Trooper Percy Manson to his mother on 31 October 1916 from In the Desert, Egypt. The letter reads:
Just a short note to catch the mail today to let you know I am still alive & keeping in the best of health & hope you are keeping the same. We are not allowed to say much now but I don’t think it makes much difference as there is not very much to say. I received a letter from Mrs MacKechnie with the last mail & also one from Mabel. We don’t get much news out here so we always look forward for a NZ mail. I had forty eight hours leave before we came here & I went to Port Said & had a splendid time seemed quite strange walking on a hard road after the sand. I had my photograph taken but I don’t think it will be up to much. I will be sending some with the next mail as they have not arrived here yet. The weather has altered now the winter has come, the climate is something lie the spring in NZ. Well, I think I will have to close hoping this will find you in the best of health.
I am Your loving son
Percy R Manson.
