Brief Description
Letters and an envelope from Percy R Manson.

a) Letter from Trooper Percy Manson to his sister Mabel.
Undated, circa World War I.
The letter reads:
No 13/3048 Tpr P R Manson
A Squadron
10th Mounted Rifles
C/o GPO
Wellington.
Dear Mabel.
Just a few lines to let you know I am still alive and kicking and hope you are the same. The voyage has been very good so far the sea being very calm. The second day after we left I was very sick and did not feel like eating any food but now I can eat like a horse. The food on board is very good, quite a change from what we had in Featherston. How is the farm. I suppose Fred is quite an old farmer by now. I hope that horse of his is looking better as I never thought we would reach Napier that night. Well, I think I will have to close this short note as news is scarce here at present. Hoping this will find you and Fred & Viv is the best of health. I am
Your loving brother Percy.

b) Letter from Trooper Percy Manson to his sister Mabel.
The letter reads:
Tel El Kebir June 18th 1916
Dear May,
Just a few lines in answer to the most welcome letter I received from you yesterday, and also the letter I got from Vivie. Well May, I am keeping in the best of health and hope you are keeping the same the weather is very hot over here at present and the flies are a nuisance when you try to scribble a few lines. I have been to Cairo since I last wrote to you, and had a good look round, of course to look around Cairo it would take a week as there is such a lot of different places to go to. The mosques are very nice inside & are worth going to see. I have been up at the training school at Zeeloun for three weeks taking a course on the Maxim Machine Gun and we had plenty to do their writing till about ten O’clock at night. they use to give us lectures & we had to write them in our note books. How is the farm getting on I suppose Fred will soon be going in to sell his wool. don’t know how long we will be here but I don’t think it will be very long now as most of the troops are going away. I see by Vivies letter that he does not care much for school. I see by your letter that Gordon has hurt his knee, so don’t suppose he will come with the twelfth Well May I will have to close this short note hoping it will find you in the best of health.
I am.
Your loving brother Percy.

c) Letter from Trooper Percy Manson to his sister Mabel written on 13 May 1916 in Egypt.
The letter reads:
Egypt
May 3 1916
Dear Mabel,
Just a few lines to let you know I received your two letters today and was very pleased to here from you. I am getting quite use to this place now, although I thought it was a very miserable place after New Zealand nothing but desert for miles around. I don’t know how long we will be here but I don’t suppose it will be very long. I met Viv a day after I got here he had been in the hospital for three or four weeks. He is looking alright now only I don’t think he is so fat as he use to be. I see by your letter that Fred has still got that old horse we drove in from Hastings to Napier with. I met Alf Walker the other night he is looking alright. The climate is very different here from New Zealand, in the day time it is very hot and at night is just the opposite. I have not been to Cairo yet but I expect I will go there one of these fine days. Bert Houghton is about fifty miles away. The eleventh Reinforcement arrived here today. I don’t suppose Viv would like starting school again after having a holiday. Well I will have to close this short note to night. Hoping this will find you all the best of health.
I am.
Your loving brother Percy.
