Brief Description
Letter and envelope from Percy R Manson.

a) Letter from Trooper Percy R Manson to his mother written on 31 August 1916 from Bir-El Amaras, Egypt. The letter reads:
Dear Mother,
Just a few lines to let you know I am keeping in the best of health and hope you are keeping the same. We have just been on a trek of forty miles so I have just landed in this place. I suppose you will think this is a town when you see the name on the top but we are out in the desert miles from any one. The Turks are farther back now, they are about eighteen miles from here. We have to get up every morning at half past two and saddle our horses in case we are needed, and one thing in particular which annoys us mostly is the German Taubes they generally come flying over just as we are having breakfast dropping bombs and by jove their(sic) is a scatter getting the horses off the lines and spreading out in all directions. The dates out here are beginning to get ripe now so it wont be so bad when they are. The food is just about the same. Today we had some rice so it wont be long before we are growing pig tails. The weather is just as hot as ever but before long I expect we will be getting a change as winter will soon be here. We have to cart our water on camels the distance of fifteen miles so we don’t waste any. We have got a well here but the water is salt just like the sea. Well I am afraid I will have to close now as news is scarce out here. Hoping this will find you in the best of health as it leaves me.
I am Your loving son
Percy R Manson.
