Brief Description
A letter from Trooper Percy R Manson to his mother, dated 8 October 1916.
The letter reads:
Dear Mother,
Again I take the pleasure of answering your most welcome letter which came to hand last Monday. I am still in Egypt & keeping in the best of health. The weather is beginning to get a little cooler now winter is coming on, but I have not seen any rain since I left NZ. I don’t think it would make any difference if it did rain here as there is no crops to spoil nothing but sand hills. The dates are beginning to get ripe now but they are not up to much as they seem to be full of grubs the trees have been neglected since the war has started. I expect if they were cooked they would be all right as it does not take much to satisfy us. The food we have been getting has been fairly good lately we have had some goat met and it was very good, only a little tough. The war news we have been getting (what little we get) has been fairly good for our side. The Allies are now proving they are more superior than Germany in both munitions & men, & I think if the wet weather in France had not hampered them they would have had them pushed further back.
I just received a most useful parcel from Tot today, the socks tell her fit me like a glove & were very acceptable. The stick of chocolate was as good as when it was sent it must have had a good passage over as one of the chaps got some and it went bad coming over & was uneatable. Well Mother, I will have to close now. Hoping this will find you in the best of health as it leaves me.
I am Your loving son
Percy R Manson.
