Brief Description
Map of Te Wai Pounamu. The land and it's people - Circa 1840.

Map showing the South Island with Māori place names:
Ripapa, Rapaki, Tai Tapu around Christchurch. Rau Kawakawa - Cook Strait.

On the reverse is a list of natural features and settlements with the Māori name, meaning and present day designation:
Tu Te Rapaki Whanoa - Widening of the thighs of the Tu Te Raki Whanoa, The Grey River. Aoraki - World of clouds - Mount Cook.

Also includes Pā of the 18 and 19 centuries:
Ara Paoa - Ancient Pā of Tu Mata Kokiri C1770's, near Okukari Bay.

Kakaunui - Te Ara I Te Uru canoe was wrecked here and the survivors built a Pā at Kakaunui, near the Waitaki River mouth.
