Brief Description
The map is titled, Historical map of New Zealand by Lieutenant Colonel R M Bell. It is part of the fact and fable series. The map is decorated around the edges with Māori motifs and has various descriptive comments regarding the history of New Zealand:
Examples are:
Mount Ngaruahoe, 7,515 feet high, was first ascended by J C Bidwill in 1839.
Captain James Cook first sighted New Zealand at Gisborne, October 1769.
Captain Cook anchored the Endeavour in Ship Cove and Queen Charlotte Sound in January 1770 and hoisted the British flag. In 1773, on his second voyage, he repaired the HMS Resolution at Ship Cove.
At each corner of the map are pictures of famous people:
Tawhiao the second Māori King, Captain William Hobson, Captain James Cook and Reverend Samuel Marsden.
