Brief Description
The nautical map of Poverty Bay to Castle Point and Cape Palliser was surveyed by Captain J L Stokes, Commander B Drury and the Officers of HMS Acheron and HMS Pandora between 1849-1855. The map shows depth soundings in fathoms, harbour lights, beacons, lighthouses, buoys, shoals, rock and sandy areas around Poverty Bay, Tera-Kako known as Mahia Peninsula, Wairoa, Napier, Blackhead, Oputu Bay, Cape Turnagain and Castle Point.

There are also two inset maps of the Long Point anchorage which were surveyed by Commander Drury, 1855 of the HMS Pandora. These show Castle Point to Cape Palliser and Opopo. Rangatira rock is recorded as being first reported in 1876.
