Brief Description
Map of Suvla Bay and the Dardanelles as part of Gallipoli campaign. Dated August 1915.

Shows the Aegean Sea, Brighton Beach, Suvla Bay, Ari Burnu, Yilgin Burnu (Chocolate Hill), Sari Bair Ridge, Chatal Dere, Kojadere, Biyuk Anafarta and Mount Turchenkeui area.

The area from Fisherman's Hut, Walkers Ridge amd Shrapnel Gully just West of the Sari Bair ridge is highlighted as being the New Zealand and Australian trenches which was an area of some 1,000 acres.
West of this area and Ari Burnu is noted as being the area where the HMS Triumph was lost.

Noted along the trench line is Lonesome Pine, Steele's Post, Courtney's Post, Quinn's Post and Pope's Post. An area North East of Saxli Dere is shown as being captured by New Zealanders on August 6.

The British Army Corps landed at Suvla Bay on 6 August 1915 and their trench system extended from Karakol Dagh, Anafarta ridge to Karatoprac. It is noted that the British Army Corps movement developed too slowly on the night of August 6th and the New Zealanders and Ghurkas, who were holding the crests of hill 971 (Sari Bair ridge) had to retire to Rhododendron Spur after taking serious casualties.

The aim of the August attacks was to pivot on Gabu Tepe and cut Turkish communications by swinging in front of this position which would allow forts on the narrows to be reduced by land batteries.

Cartographer is listed as W J Harding. Published by the Department of Lands and Survey.
