Brief Description
The illustrated manuscript is titled: In commemoration of the Year of the Jubilee of New Zealand, 1887, showing the progress of New Zealand during the 50 year reign of her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria.

The manuscript was designed, composed and written by James McKain Meek, now in his 73 year. It was commenced on March 2 1887 and completed July 12 of the same year under the patronage of the following: Sir Robert Stout, John Thomas Matson, Alfred Cox, Lyttleton Times Company, A J White, Union Steam ship Company, Sir Julius Vogel, William Pratt, His Honour Mr Justice Johnston, Governor of New Zealand Sir Fredrick Whitaker, Sir George Grey and other dignitaries.

Bordering the commemorative manuscript are various New Zealand historical facts and figures such as, the Mayors of towns and cities of New Zealand. Also recorded are the various provincial names and some facts pertaining to them such as,
Hawke's Bay, proclaimed 1856, containing an area of 2,882,300 acres or 4,410 square miles with a population of 13,890 males and 10,678 females. The total population of Napier is recorded as being 7,680.

Other information contained on the manuscript is the names of the Justices of the Peace, members of the Executive Council, Governors Generals and members of the House of Representatives. Sir J Prendergast was Chief Justice at the time of publication.
