Brief Description
The map of the Taupo volcanic zone shows mountains, rivers, lakes, bush areas, volcanic boundary zones, hot springs and geysers around the Bay of Plenty, Rurima Rocks, Maketu, Tauranga, Rotorua, Rotoiti, Roto Tarawera, Ohinemutu, Ngakaro, Ngahewa Patoreka, Te Nihu o Tekiore and Taupo Moana. Lake Taupo is described as being 1225 feet above sea level, 65 fathoms deep and 24 miles long.
The mountains shown are Ruapehu - 8,878 feet high, Tongariro - 5,641 feet, Ngaruahoe - 7,481 feet, Titirau Penga, Kiwitahi, Pukehu and Paeroa.
The Opepe massacre near Maunganama which occurred in June 1869, is recorded.
