About this object
Engraving on paper featuring an overturned coach that has caught fire on a narrow side street of Charing Cross, London. The road is known today as Whitehall. There are inn signs labelled 'Bagnio' and 'The New Bagnio'. The work is rife with disorderly conduct.
This engraving is part of the Four Times of the Day series. The artist originally produced four oil paintings in this series in 1736 (Morning, Noon, Evening and Night). In 1738 the paintings were reproduced and published as a series of engravings. This is a print of plate 4, 'Night'. Of the four plates, three were designed and engraved by the artist. The forth, 'Evening' was designed by the artist but engraved by Bernard Baron.
