Brief Description
Assorted documents relating to the Colenso Centenary Celebration of his crossings of the Ruahine Ranges:

a) Timeline of typed notes from an account of visits to, and crossings over, the Ruahine Mountain Range, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, and of the Natural History of the Region Performed in 1845 - 1847 cum multis aliis by William Colenso, FLS. (Prepared by P J Grant for the William Colenso commemorative visit, 6 December 1975, of the Hawke's Bay Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand).

b) Newspaper clipping entitled: Colenso Centenary Was Focus for Interest of Māori and Pākehā. Published by The Taihape Times on Wednesday, 24 March 1948. Includes a full one page spread of articles relating to William Colenso.

c) Black and white landscape photograph of Mokai Valley, 20 miles east of Taihape with Aorangi in the background. A memorial to William Colenso is located where the road passes through a patch of native bush.

d) Black and white photograph entitled: Colenso Memorial in Mokai Valley, 20 miles east of Taihape.

e) Handmade booklet with hand drawn cover page entitled: Colenso Centenary 1948, 21 March.
Various items are attached to the pages of the booklet:
First page: a black and white photograph of Bishop Bennett addressing a gathering in the bush clearing at the site of Awarua Pā on William Colenso's first visit in February 1847. The gentleman on the right of the group is W Simcox, Grandson of Reverend Colenso; A blank invitation to the Colenso Centenary Celebration, Taihape, March, 1948, to celebrate the centenary of the founding of Mission Stations in the Inland Patea (Upper Rangitikei) district by the Reverend William Colenso and his crossing of the Ruahine Range (the first crossing by a Pākehā).
