Brief Description
Assorted Documents attributed to Edward Henderson.
a) Discharge certificate for Edward Henderson, Canterbury Infantry Battalion of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Effective 15 August 1914 for being no longer physically fit for War Service, on account of wounds being received in action.
b) Letter from Department of Lands and Survey regarding Section 6 Block XV, Maungaharuru, property of E Henderson. Dated 12 September 1918, letter refers to helping returned soldiers pay for farming supplies and equipment.
c) Envelope addressed to Mr E Henderson, private bag H W White and Henderson, Kaiwaka. Has a very rare Government Buildings issued stamp on it. Postmarked repeatedly as 1917.
d) Postcard dated 16 April 1916. From Peggie Hall to Ted. Writes about the weather. Front of postcard is a poem or song about missing soldiers off at war.
e) Undated postcard from Jack "the giant-killer" to Ned. Writes of people from Kakahu going to war, as well as Frank and Bob Campbell (Bob is trying to pull out). Writes about Ned's injured knee received in battle and about that being the cost of doing your duty. Explains how mother is feeling better and how she gets about. Notes where people named Harry, Mark, Bob and George are. Front of card has images of red roses and a ribbon, there is a poem about roses and blue glitter has been used to write out: Best Wishes from Kakahu.
f) Postcard from Peggie Hall to Ted dated 20 November 1915. Writes about Jack being up at Christchurch for camp and will soon being coming down to one in the Timaru Show Grounds, as well as the weather.
g) Programme for the Brand Lane Festival series at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, the prospectus is for the 1915 to 1916 season. The first page notes that smoking inside is allowed and encouraged so that ladies don't have to be separated from the gentlemen who are mostly lovers of the fragrant weed. Following are pages on the principal musicians, singers and the symphonies. The last page has a small missive on Music in War Time.
h) Programme for the Brand Lane's Orchestral Concerts series of 1915 to 1916 held at Free Trade Hall, Manchester. This programme is specifically for the sixth concert on 22 January 1916, with summaries of each symphony and images of the main musicians, as well as the composer. The last page is a brief programme for the next concert.
i) Booklet entitled: Commanders of the Empire, number 2 - Soldiers. Published by Views, Limited in Piccadilly. Includes images of famous or important soldiers of the British Empire. Front pages are one paragraph biographies of those photographed. Undated, but given the biographies of the soldiers pictured indicate that it was published towards the end of, or just after, the Boer War. This issue starts with an image of Her Majesty the Queen.
j) Booklet entitled: Commanders of the Empire, number 3 - Soldiers. Published by Views, Limited in Piccadilly. Includes images of famous or important soldiers of the British Empire.
