Brief Description
Letters, a petition and an inaugural address written by a variety of authors as follows:

a) A letter written by William Colenso to Dr Moore, dated 17 July 1893. The letter is in response to a copy of the Petition to the House of Representatives from the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury New Zealand regarding the publishing of a New Zealand Flora handbook. William Colenso writes that: 1. the Handbook of the New Zealand Flora by Sir Joseph Hooker be reprinted in a 2 edition; that 2. later discoveries by Sir Joseph Hooker be included in the 2 edition; that 3. the handbook should be printed for teachers, students and settlers; and that 4. Mr Thomas Kirk should assist in the new publication.

b) A typed transcript of the letter written by William Colenso to Dr Moore, dated 17 July 1893.

c) The Humble Petition of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury New Zealand to the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives in Parliament Assembled, dated 5 July 1893. The petition describes the history of the Handbook of the New Zealand Flora by Sir Joseph Hooker. The petition mentions that the 1100 species listed in the 1864 book was outdated, with the count now at 1900 species excluding varieties, and the distribution of species had expanded. The letter argues that Mr Thomas Kirk's Forest Flora of New Zealand (1889), and John Buchanan's Manual of the New Zealand Grasses [The Indigenous Grasses of New Zealand (1878, 1879, 1880)] are insufficient in covering the plants and weeds of New Zealand. Sir Joseph Hooker, the author of the Handbook of the New Zealand Flora is quoted in the petition as recommending a resident from the Colony to write an updated Handbook. The petition goes on to quote Sir James Hector, Director of the Geological Survey of New Zealand, mentioning a new edition of the Handbook of the Flora of New Zealand, approved by Sir Joseph Hooker, in the process of preparation by Mr Thomas Kirk.

d) Seven sheets of paper affixed with a metal staple in the top left corner. The papers include:

A copy of a letter to Mr Thomas Kirk from Joseph Hooker, addressed and dated The Camp, Sunningdale, Berkshire, 17 September 1890. Mr Joseph Hooker writes that he does not have the time to write a new edition of the handbook and recommends someone from the colony write it. He suggests Mr Thomas Kirk.

A copy of a letter to Mr Thomas Kirk from Baron F von Mueller, addressed and dated Melbourne, 15 March 1893. He mentions the lack of time Mr Joseph Hooker has to write a new publication and recommends that Mr Thomas Kirk do it.

An extract from the Inaugural Address of Sir James Hector to the Australasian Association at the Christchurch Meeting, 1891. Hector notes that the list of species of Flora between 1840 and 1863 grew from 632 to 2451 and at 1891 had grown to 3920 species. Mr Thomas Kirk, with the approval of Sir Joseph Hooker, was undertaking a new edition.

A copy of a letter to Professor Bickerton from Captain Frederick Hutton, Curator, Canterbury Museum, addressed and dated Canterbury Museum, Christchurch, 11 February 1893. Captain Frederick Hutton advocates that Mr Thomas Kirk write a new edition of Sir Joseph Hooker's Handbook of the Flora of New Zealand.
