Brief Description
Letters dated in the 1870s and 1880s from people already living in Hawke's Bay requesting servants from the newly arrived immigrant ships. Most letters specify what kind of servant is wanted and what work will be required of them. Some have other particulars, such as: living situation; wages offered; issues with previous servants; difficulty engaging a servant; etcetera. The letters are addresses to either: Mr Fox the Barrack or Depot Master; Mrs Fox at the Emigration Barracks; Mr Fannin the Immigration Agent; Tyler the Immigration Officer; or Mrs Balfour.

Ships specifically mentioned in the letters are: Adamant, Bebington, City of Auckland, Countess of Kintore, Fernglen, Helen Denny, Hermione, Inverness, Ionic, Kiwi, Rangitikei, Renfrewshire, Triumph, Victory, and Waitara.
