Brief Description
A booklet entitled: How New Zealand's Greatest Disaster Shattered Hastings, Earthquake and Fires, 3 February 1931. The booklet begins with a brief description of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake and the subsequent fires. It describes the effect they had on Hastings and Havelock North, and continues with a photographic record of the event. The photographs are attributed to a number of photographers: Whitehead, Lovell Smith, A W Shaef, Gradwell and Rice, Wallace Poll, Phipps, Ken Hoar, W M Fraser, L van Tykel, His Excellency the Govenor-General Lord Bledisloe, the French series and the Weekly News.

Scenes include the following: Municipal Theatre, Heretaunga Street East, Heretaunga Street West, Roachs' Department Store, Cosy Theatre, Spencer's Garage, Bank of New Zealand, Central School, High School, Fire Station, Methodist Church, Hastings West School, Municipal Library, Tribune building, Post Office, Havelock Bridge, Longlands, Te Aute Māori School, Club Tea Rooms, The Grand Hotel, Slater's Fruit Store, Vogtherr's Cool Store, Mayor Roach, Police Volunteers, Māori Welfare Committee, Trades Hall, Gill Brothers, King Street and the Pakipaki Meat Works.
