Object detail
Brief Description
Manuscript, The Refugee Train. An unidentified person's recollection of leaving Napier after the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake by the refugee train.
The text details how on Friday 6 February many children and their mothers gathered at the Napier Railway Station and were seen off by their fathers. The writer was fourteen years old and travelled with one older and one younger sister with their mother. The long train moved very slowly over bridges and hastily repaired tracks. After many stops and starts they arrived in Wellington where the Red Cross met them. This family then went to stay with their four aunties who cared for them.
