Brief Description
Souvenir Issue of Hawke's Bay Tribune in magazine form - Emergency Earthquake Editions reprinted.

This edition contains all the sheets that were issued in the earliest days after the 3 February 1931 Napier earthquake. Each of the 11 earthquake editions are reprinted and there is a note inside the front page that records:

It should be understood that these leaflets are reprinted exactly as they were issued, and owing to the early confusion following the earthquake of February 3, the casualty lists were necessarily incomplete and in certain details inaccurate. Corrections, however, will be found in each case in the later sheets.

There is a further note inside the back cover that says:

By the illustrations in the foregoing pages have been shown the destruction of the Tribune's printing offices by the earthquake and the work of reconstruction by the Tribune staff, which was sufficiently far advanced to permit of the printing of a four-page paper of the original sized sheet in less than fourteen days after the great disaster.

But this was not all that was accomplished. Provision was also made for the printing of the Hawke's Bay Herald at these works. The building and plant of the Herald, the oldest established newspaper in the province, which for seventy four years has printed a morning issue at Napier, were completely destroyed by earthquake and fire on the fatal morning of February 3. To enable its proprietors, Messrs. Dinwiddie, Walker and Company Limited, to resume publication at once, a merger of that company with the Tribune Limited was hurriedly arranged and the popular Hawke's Bay morning paper made its reappearance on February 19 in its old form and under its old management.

There are some photographs inside of the Herald - Tribune building.
