The letter is a response to a letter of complaint concerning funeral charges, body being left exposed for a period of time, responsibility for death, use of death to defame the association (Mr Stewart named as being responsible for this but name is subsequently crossed out). End of the letter refers to a following letter by Mr Fulton giving a more reliable account of the whole matter. Research suggests the letter refers to a Mr James Dallas, 23. The Hawke's Bay Herald, 5 December 1890, details the inquest on page 2: An inquest was held at the Railway Hotel yesterday, before Mr E Patten, coroner, and a jury of whom Mr F G Smith was foreman, to inquire into the death of a young man named James Dallas. Constable Harvey conducted the inquiry on behalf of the police, and Mr Puflett was present on behalf of the Union Steamship Company. It appeared from the evidence that [the] deceased, with some others, was working yesterday morning as a labourer assisting to slow into railway trucks some ironbark piles being landed from the Southern Cross. These piles were secured by chain sling which as passed over them with a Round turn, the eye on one end of the chain being passed through the eye at the other end and then linked on to a hook shaped like the letter C. One pile, however, was too thick to allow of this method, and both eyes were linked on to the hook. While this pile was being lifted on of the eyes slipped off the hook, and the pile fell, striking [the] deceased, who died at once. The medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to fracture of the bones of the neck and crushing of the spinal cord. The evidence of the second mate of the steamer, and of the seaman who put the sling round the pile, was to the effect that the work was carefully performed, and that when a pile was lifted all the men were warned to stand clear. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and added a rider to the effect that the hook used was faulty in design, and that all such hooks ought to be officially inspected before being used for slinging cargo. The deceased was about 23 years of age, and had no relatives in Hawke's Bay, the members of his family residing in Otago.
