(b) Letter from Captain A C Hanman, Palestine to Mr A Manson dated 8 April 1918. The letter reads:
Dear Mrs Manson,
On behalf of the Sqdn and myself I wish to express our deepest sympathy with you on your sad bereavement occasioned through the loss of your son Percy. I was with him up to a few minutes before he was hit & he had been doing exceptionally fine work. He was No 1 on a machine gun all day & if he had not been killed would certainly have been decorated for his exceptional coolness under heavy fire. It was after midday that he was hit being killed instantaneously bullet passing through the head. The engagement was at Amman on the Hedjaz railway south of the Dead Sea & as the operations were only a raid we had to bury him together with other comrades close to the village of Amman before we withdrew. I have known your son ever since he joined the Sqdn being the Section Officer for some time & was very much attached to him. Mr Picot his present officer was wounded in the same engagement before Percy was hit so will not be able to give you any particulars. Personal effects will be forwarded to you by NZ S headquarters in due course. Again expressing my deepest feelings for you in this your great loss.
I remain
Yours very sincerely
A C Hanman Capt
