a) A letter written by William Colenso to John Burtton, Kumeroa, addressed and dated Napier, 17 July 1886. The letter, written in reply to a letter from John Burtton received 12 July, thanks him for the deformed huia's bill that he had sent him. William Colenso states that he will have much pleasure in showing it at a meeting of the New Zealand Institute. William Colenso requests that John Burtton send him other items from among the insects, the mosses and ferns, and small plants, shrubs and trees, that are peculiar to his neighbourhood. He states that a few postage stamps are enclosed for this purpose.

b) An envelope addressed to: Mr John Burtton, Settler, Kumeroa. The top right corner of the envelope has been ripped out and is missing. On the back is a postmark and various notes and scribbles in black ink and pencil.

c) A newspaper clipping attributed to The Daily Telegraph, dated 6 November 1962. The article is titled: Colenso paper now in Hawke's Bay Museum. The article describes the acquisition of the letter and a signed copy of a booklet containing extracts from the Transactions of the New Zealand Institute, Volume X.
