Brief Description
Fourteen letters written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen as follows:

(a) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Dannevirke, 3 June 1894. William Colenso writes explaining that due to illness he was unable to travel to Norsewood to visit the Mortensen family.

(b) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, Sunday 12 August 1894. William Colenso writes about the plant specimens he collected in Norsewood, people in ill health with influenza, and relieving at the Woodville Church. He recommends Hans Mortensen read Romans 10 Chapter.

(c) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, Tuesday 13 November 1894. William Colenso writes that he has been very busy, serving two churches. He also mentions mounting plant specimens from Dannevirke and Woodville and Mrs Hill's collecting from East Cape, religious matters, and Hans planned trip to the Ruahine ranges.

(d) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, Tuesday 15 January 1895. William Colenso writes of being unable to visit Norsewood as scheduled, due to being required to relieve the Minister in Napier to prevent the Church from being closed.

(e) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, Thursday 21 February 1895. William Colenso writes to inform the Mortensen family of his impending visit after holding a service at the English Church in Dannevirke.

(f) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Dannevirke, Monday 4 March 1895. William Colenso requests a cutting and half a teacup full of berries from a roadside shrub, as well as seeds from Hans Mortensen's neighbour, Olsen's Māori shrubs so he can send the seeds to England.

(g) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Dannevirke, 25 March 1895. William Colenso writes of his thanks to the Heavenly Father that Hans Mortensen survived both a fire and a nail in his foot. He discusses leaving for Woodville to visit the recently widowed Mrs Jones and identifies Timothy grass.

(h) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Tuesday 18 June 1895, Napier. William Colenso writes about the booklets about New Zealand and toys 30 years old that used to belong to his children, small books and the New Testament and Psalms that he posted.

(i) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, Thursday 14 May 1896. William Colenso writes of an impending visit to Dannevirke, featuring in the Napier newspapers, an Acacia tree uprooted in a gale, and suffering from Rheumation.

(j) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, 16 July 1896. William Colenso writes of receiving berries, and sending books to the children.

(k) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Dannevirke, Sunday 6 September 1896. William Colenso writes of being confined to his lodgings due to rain, which caused him to catch cold, making his visit to the Bush a waste of time. He mentions a person named Axel [likely Hans Mortensen's brother] and there being plenty of work in Auckland, and the endeavour to live as a practical Christian.

(l) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, Sunday 18 October 1896. William Colenso writes about John Frederickson's death and quotes biblical passages to bring comfort to sorrow. Incomplete letter.

(m) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, 6 January 1897. William Colenso writes of Hans Mortensen completing shearing and beginning haymaking, and about helping the Minister at St Augustine's.

(n) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, addressed and dated Napier, 10 September 1897. William Colenso writes he will not be able to attend Hans Mortensen's National Demonstration due to illness, which means he is not being able to use his arm and hand. He mentions Axel not enjoying his dangerous work.

(o) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen, dated Wednesday 19. William Colenso writes about his parcel of seeds, including Cork-tree. Incomplete letter.

(p) A letter written by William Colenso to Hans Mortensen. No date or details. William Colenso writes about being engaged at the Cathedral, a girl receiving a parcel he sent, being good Lutherans, lies of the Mormons and Adventists, and quotes bible passages. Incomplete letter.
