Molly was in Napier at the time of the 3 February earthquake as her younger sister Flow had died of meningitis two days earlier in the Napier Hospital. In the letter Molly describes how she and her two children escaped from a two-storied building in Hastings Street into an alley-way which led to Emerson Street.
