About this object
Flying High. Otatara Pā will be festooned with flags and banners over coming weeks as the first annual summer festival continues. Many of the flags are replicas of significant or symbolic signals. Laurence O’Reilly, 12, is pictured here with Te Wepu (The Whip) the original of which was made in red silk by Catholic nuns from Meeanee who presented it to Chief Kahungungu. It has five symbols on it, including a bleeding heart symbolising Māori heartbreak over the loss of their land.

The photograph was taken on the 29 December 1993 and published in the newspaper on that date.
