Bass Takes Top Aria Award. Auckland bass singer Richard Weston collected the first prize of $2000 in the Daily Telegraph Aria Contest held in Napier's Century Theatre last night. Aria contest winner Richard Weston, front, with runner-up Margot McLaughlin, right and third placegetter Daphne Collins. Daily Telegraph critic Peter Williams said Weston's performances demonstrated a voice of consistent quality with convincing characterisation. Judge Emily Mair, a lecturer in vocal studies at Victoria University. Aria was feature event of the annual Napier Performing Arts Festival.
