Brief Description
Letter and envelope from Percy R Manson.
a) Letter from Percy R Manson to his mother. Written while on active service and dated 1 March 1917. The letter reads:
Dear Mother,
Just a few lines to let you know I am still alive & keeping in the best of health, & hope you are keeping the same. I received the cable you sent informing (me) that Papa had passed away, and today I received Mabel’s letter in which she said that Papa had been ailing for a long time, & at the last he was about three weeks in hospital. I would have like to have been home before he died as I suppose I was the only one away. I have just received word from the Anglo Egyptian Bank that the money was cabled over has arrived. The letter was delayed for about a month. I will be sending down today for it. I have been down to Pt Said for a couple of days leave & I feel much better for it although it is not much of a place. You can get a decent feed down there & I think that is what we want.
We are camped fairly close to the sea now so I don’t suppose it will be so hot. Some of the boys went down and caught some crabs & cooked them but I don’t care much for them, I think the smell is worse than the taste.
There was a mine washed up on the beach. It was the first I have seen. They are something like one of those life buoys you see on the tops of rocks. Well Mother I think I will have to close now. Hoping this will find you in the best of health.
I am Your loving son
