Brief Description
Letter and envelope from Percy R Manson.
a) Letter from Percy R Manson to his mother. Written while on active service in Palestine and dated 1 December 1917. The letter reads:
Dear Mother,
Just a few lines in answer to your most welcome letter which having been delayed for about a month down the line on account of us being on the move. Came to hand yesterday. I have been keeping in the best of health so far. We have had a fairly strenuous month, some times travelling all night, all day, without any sleep. The weather is beginning to get cold now. I don’t suppose it will be long before we will be getting some wet weather. My bivvie mate and I bought a nice canvas bivvie for the wet weather but have never used it yet as we could not carry it & had to leave it at the dump. I don’t suppose my mate will be able to live in it for a couple of month as he got badly wounded in our last scrap with the Turks, he was shot through the shoulder. I have not heard from Walter yet so I was wondering how he is getting on. I suppose by now he will be in the firing line in France. I suppose you at home are all looking forward for Xmas to come. It does not make much difference here as every day seems alike. I posted some Xmas cards we had printed so I hope you get them. Well Mother, I will close now as news is very scarce here. Hoping this finds you enjoying the best of health.
I am Your loving son
Percy R Manson
b) White military issue envelope with green stripes is for use on active service. Originally addressed to Mrs S Manson at Napier Terrace, but that was crossed out and it has been addressed to Mr A Manson of Taumaranui.
