Object detail

Brief Description
The diary entitled: a voyage from London to New Zealand commenced 13 May 1884 was written by Maria Webb, wife of Anthony Spur Webb, Anglican Minister at Ormondville 1884. Maria was commonly known as Patty.

The diary opens on board the British Queen, a four-masted vessel which, having been previously used in the sugar trade from Jamaica, was infested with rats and full of cockroaches. Patty discusses seasickness, events on the voyage, the children and her daily chores. The last entry for 1884 was 2 July when the British Queen landed at Dunedin.

Maria recommences her diary on 21 January 1886 and finishes on 11 March 1886, at which stage the family was living at Ormondville.
