Brief Description
Registration papers for Esther.

Brigantine; two masts; square stern; build - carvel. 56.6 feet in length; 15.9 feet in breadth; 8.5 feet in depth. 47 tons. 16 January 1873. She was built on the Clarence River, New South Wales in 1849.

Includes:
1. Letter to transfer the registry of the Esther to Port of Lyttelton. Owner Peter Cunningham. 8 May 1873.

2. Declaration of ownership. Peter Cunningham of Christchurch. 5 May 1873. W Johnston is master of the ship.

3. Letter about measuring the vessel for registration, 10 December 1873.

4. Letter - insurance for the wreck of the Brig Esther (Captain James Campbell) as she lays stranded. 14 August 1872.

5. Letter regarding the ownership of the Esther 7 December 1872.

6. Declaration of ownership - owner Richard Barrows of Napier, publican. Has written - wrecked and abandoned on the Boulder Bank, Port Napier. December 1872. 10 January 1873.

7. Measurements of ship, Napier, 11 December 1872.

8. Certificate of survey - 16 January 1873.

She stranded on the Boulder Bank at the Western Spit inside the bar at Napier 26 September 1872 (1876 is recorded in 'Shipwrecks: New Zealand Disasters) but was subsequently refloated and repaired. She eventually foundered off Cape Campbell in September 1882, with the loss of all hands (eight).
