e. Letter by William Main which records: John Nicol Crombie, an Auckland photographer, set off on a tour to the southern provinces of New Zealand in May 1858. Prior to his arrival in Napier he advertised in the Hawke’s Bay Herald and Ahuriri Advocate to announce that his specimens of Photographic Portraiture were universally acknowledged to be unsurpassed. Crombie arrived at the Port of Napier on the steamer Wonga Wonga, in the middle of August 1858.
