Brief Description
Five lease agreements between Māori and Joshia Pratt Hamlin of Napier, Native Interpreter.
1. Leasing of Ohuia Block containing 1808 acres. 1 December 1881. Close to Wairoa River. Signed by Tiopira Kaukau, Matehe Papi, Arihia Piha and Hamana Tiakiwai of Wairoa. They still have sufficient land at Ngamotu and at Opoho, near Wairoa. Signed by George Preece, Resident Magistrate, Wairoa.
2. Leasing of Ohuia Block containing 1808 acres. 1 December 1881. Close to Wairoa River. Signed by Ramari Ngahau, Erina Huki, Paora Rakau, Apirana Kaimoana, Hori Kerei Taikiwai, Rerekaipuke ..., Hanita Mangere, Hariata Paritangohia all of Hawke's Bay. They still have sufficient land at Ngamotu and at Opoho, near Wairoa.
3. Harata Tari, Ruta te Kahika and Mere Pakai all of Waiohiki. Dated 11 January 1882. They still have sufficient land at Ngamotu and at Opoho, near Wairoa.
4. Petera Whakahoro, Hohepa te Iwi Rohi, Wata Karuhaka of Hawke's Bay. Dated 29 December 1881. They still have sufficient land at Pakarakanui, near Wairoa.
5. Watene Toromata and Ataraita Whakahoro of Wairoa. Dated 1 December 1881. She still has sufficient land at Hinewhaki West.
6. Marara Tuku of Hawke's Bay. Dated 29 December 1881. They still have sufficient land at Ngamotu and at Opoho, near Wairoa.
An interesting clause in the application is that no spirituous liquors, arms or warlike stores formed the consideration for the said deed.
On each page is attached a stamp for stamp duty.
