Brief Description
The book is titled: A History of the Birds of New Zealand. It was illustrated by Johannes Keuleman and written by Walter Lawry Buller, Resident Magistrate of Wanganui, New Zealand. There is a gold embossed lithograph of a takahe on the front cover.

There is a list of subscribers for the book including Charles Darwin and Dr Joseph Hooker. The frontispiece depicts a Dinornis giganteus, commonly known as the moa, and 35 coloured plates of New Zealand native birds.

The introduction gives a short history of the avifauna and notes on some of the natural sections. The descriptive information is full, giving native and superseded names, diagnosis in Latin and English, and much general and subsidiary information, including a description of the adult bird, the difference in appearance between male and female, varieties, the nestlings and general remarks.
