Brief Description
The book is made up of two booklets The first is titled: An Account of the Settlements of the New Zealand Company, from personal observation during a residence there. Written by Henry William Petre, who was son of Lord Petre, a director of the New Zealand Company. He arrived at Port Nicholson on board the Oriental, February 1840 and returned to England in 1841. There are two engravings: Part of Lambton Harbour, Port Nicholson, drawn by Charles Heaphy, and part of New Plymouth Settlement. Included is a map of New Zealand from official documents with the emblem of the New Zealand Company stamped on it.

The second booklet is titled: The Manga-A-Toro Settlement, Hawke's Bay, particulars, terms and conditions of disposal and occupation of 19,422 acres. Included is a map from surveys and illustrations from photographs.
