Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition by Joseph G Edmundson. He writes about family memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

Joseph was just over fifteen months old when the earthquake struck. His family's house and his grandparents house were at the end of Lighthouse Road. The brick part of his grandparents house where the billiard room was located, collapsed, but the billiard table stayed level. Most of the damage to the house was where it was constructed of brick, with the wooden areas not so badly damaged. Some of the family's Swedish crystal glasses survived and are still being used. Joseph's father worked at the Acetone Illuminating and Welding Company in Owen Street. After the earthquake Joseph and his mother stayed in Christchurch with her side of the family. They were lucky not to be affected by the big slip that came down off Bluff Hill.
