Brief Description
Letter and photograph to the Be Our Guest competition from Jim Dine about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. Titled: 1931 Earthquake Memories: a talk to the Rotary Club of Taradale 1 February 2001. Three survivors spoke to Rotary that night. It was just prior to the 70th anniversary of the earthquake.
At the time of the earthquake Jim was three and a half years old. His family lived at 68 King Street, which is now the Rudolf Steiner kindergarten. He was with his mother in the kitchen and they ran outside. His mother was eight months pregnant with Jim's younger brother. The family travelled in to Nelson Crescent, Napier to see if Jim's grandparents were safe. They all stayed in Taradale where Jim's father had a dairy farm. He gave away the milk for the next three months. One of the victims of the earthquake was Jim's pet lamb which was killed and eaten on the old coal range on the back lawn. Jim and his mother were evacuated to Christchurch where his brother was born. They returned to Napier three months after the earthquake to a fully repaired house.
