Brief Description
Letter and photograph to the Be Our Guest competition from Irene Stirling about memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

a) Letter written by Irene Stirling about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, circa 2005. Irene had just started work with Williams and Kettle at the port. She was in an office and tried to get out as soon as the earthquake started. The wharf outside had collapsed with wharf piles thrown into the water. H M S Veronica was moored at the port and Irene and her work colleague were taken on board. One of the shipping clerks took her over the hill but she had to walk home. Her old school Napier Technical College had collapsed.

Her father was a tram inspector and after the earthquake he lost his job. Irene was transferred to Williams and Kettle head office in town when the offices were rebuilt. Irene writes that after the earthquake there was a huge influx of professionals and tradesmen into Napier and that there were many dances and concerts. Irene and her mother were evacuated for a short time to Wellington.

b) Photograph of Irene taken in Taradale in February 2003.
