Brief Description
Entry to the Be Our Guest competition by Madeline Diggle. She writes about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake. The title is: Memories as the Result of an Earthquake.

Mrs I R Diggle's father was a volunteer St John Ambulance officer in Northland and was flown to Napier to help after the earthquake. The family later moved to Napier. Madeline was seven and her brother Bill was five. She attended Hastings Street School and was in Napier during the 5 May aftershock. Every chimney in the street had fallen down. Madeline later married the son of one of her father's friends at the time. Her letter also includes the story of her mother-in-law Kathleen Ann Diggle, who helped people trapped in houses on Gladstone Road, and other members of the Diggle family. Included is a cover letter signed Mrs I R Diggle.
