Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition by William R Young. He writes about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

William Young was in Standard 6 at Hastings West Primary School on 3 February 1931. He was playing cricket in the back playground and flung himself on the ground when the earthquake struck. William and his friend Angus made their way home noticing that many of the chimneys had come down. The family moved to the lucerne paddock next to their house. William recalls the next violent shake that came around 9 o'clock that night, and that nobody slept very well.

The family went to stay in Feilding for a couple of weeks and then returned, once again staying in Bell tents in the lucerne paddock. The author attended open air classes at Ebbett Park as his school was too damaged. In colder weather, classes moved to rooms underneath the grandstand at the racecourse. William's school was rebuilt in wood about four to five months later.
