Object detail
Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition written by Kathleen Taylor. She writes about her memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
Kathleen Taylor was 8¾ years old on 3 February 1931. She was at school in St Joseph's Street, Waipukurau. Her family lived in Mitchell Street, Waipukurau. They slept in the front porch for weeks. Her cousin Marjorie, who lived in Napier with her husband and son, was eventually found at the Waipukurau camping ground to where they had been evacuated. They had been living below Bluff Hill in Napier and the son Peter had narrowly escaped being buried by a slip during the earthquake.
