Object detail

Brief Description
Letter to the Be Our Guest competition written by T B Lowe. He writes about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

T B Lowe was a new entrant at Mahora School in Hastings on 3 February 1931. He was one of two children who made their way out to Frederick Street without going through the pergola, and that one girl whose surname was Spence, died at Mahora School. Another girl Topsy Retter was injured. He had an older brother, and the family lived next to the Mahora Stud dairy farm.

Included with the letter are photocopies of photographs. One shows the family of Mrs E L Lowe who lived on Pakowhai Road; T B Lowe is one of the children sitting around an orchard cart which they used as a table. The family slept outside under sheets over the clothesline for three weeks. The neighbouring family had a peacock which shrieked whenever an aftershock struck. Other photocopied photographs show Dartmoor Bridge and Roach's department store.
