Brief Description
Letter and photograph to the Be Our Guest competition from Leslie George Grant. Leslie writes about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.

a) Letter written by Leslie George Grant, circa 2005. Leslie was at Napier Technical College between 1930-31. He was in the laboratory when the earthquake struck. He and the other pupils immediately hid under their desks. After a second quake they were able to get out of the rubble and stood looking at open sky. Leslie's brother Jim was also at the College; he was one of eight boys killed at the school. His body was found several days later under heavy rubble in the quadrangle. Les writes that in the road and their driveway liquid sand bubbled up. His family walked to Park Island cemetery for the Mass Grave services and then walked home. Leslie's wife Olive (Bid) went to the same school but they were not aware of each other at the time. They married on 1 January 1941. Leslie's letter was signed Les and Bid Grant.

b) Pictorial photograph of the Technical College Napier after the earthquake attributed to Sorrell.
