Letter to the Be Our Guest competition written by George Ludlow about his memories of the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake.
George Ludlow was at Parkvale School in Hastings on 3 February 1931. He had a sister Joan, and brothers Ken and Ray. George's class was doing drill near the swimming pool when the earthquake struck. Following the earthquake George ran back into the classroom to to retrieve his lunch bag and narrowly avoided injury when the side wall of a building collapsed. He was delivered to his home by a wood and coal merchant, Mr McKain. The family lived in Riverslea Road. Their mother was injured by the falling chimney and was taken to Wellington Hospital for specialist treatment on her foot. The children returned home to Hastings after living with relatives in Wellington for six months.
